DESCRIPTION

The polar bear Ursus maritimus is the white bear that is native mainly to the Arctic Circle. It is the world's largest carnivore and, along with the omniverous Kodiak bear, is the largest kind of bear. It is shown here on a rock outcrop with a fish trapped beneath one paw, overlooking a sea of icebergs. The image is a JPEG containing smoothed black lines on white. The engraving is in the public domain, and was published in 1875 by Springfield: C.A. Nicholls and Company in The Polar And Tropical Worlds by Dr. Georg Ludwig Hartwig.
