Vintage engraving from 1880 of the pirate and buccaneer François l'Olonnais (Jean-David Nau). A French pirate, active in the Caribbean during the 1660s. He was an was an expert torturer, and his techniques included slicing portions of flesh off the victim with a sword, burning them alive, or "woolding", which involved tying knotted rope around the victim's head until their eyes were forced out. After his ship ran around in 1668 he was captured by the Kuna tribe of Indians and eaten.
