Vintage engraving from 1856 the Burghers of Calais before Edward King of England. Edward III, after a victory in the Battle of Crécy, laid siege to Calais, while Philip VI of France ordered the city to hold out at all costs. Philip failed to lift the siege, and starvation eventually forced the city to parley for surrender. Edward offered to spare the people of the city if any six of its top leaders would surrender themselves to him, presumably to be executed. Though the burghers expected to be executed, their lives were spared by the intervention of England's Queen, Philippa of Hainault, who persuaded her husband to exercise mercy by claiming that their deaths would be a bad omen for her unborn child. ++Inspector: Info about source material uploaded as property release++ View More: King Old People Burghers of Calais

A detailed map of France showing all the main and subsidiary regions. Each main region is on its own named layer and each subdivision of that region is separately selectable. The main regions have a thicker white outline, the subdivisions have a darker green fill. At the base of a map is a lighter green fill so any region or subdivision can be deleted and a background color will still be present. It is simple to re color or delete any division. There are 25 layers in all, including sea and a darker 3D edge to the map. It is easy to remove the sea and surrounding countries should you wish to use France alone. This vintage engraving depicts the Gates of Calais, France. It is the creation of William Hogarth (1697 - 1764), the brilliant English cartoonist. He had a great sense of humor, as seen in the characters here, including soldiers, a monk, and a man carrying roast beef. Hogarth was arrested by the French who were suspicious of his activity; he was quickly released. It was engraved by T. Cook after the painting by Hogarth. Published in an 1810 collection of works by Hogarth, it is now in the public domain. Digital restoration by Steve Wynn Photography.
